30 Day Song Challenge, Day 9: A Song That Makes You Want To Dance

Here’s another where I’ll do a DJ set and a song:

Paula Temple, set at Bloc. Weekender 2015

Temple is one of my favorite (if not my outright favorite) current artist. Rhythmic nuance and complexity and a shit ton of face-melting techno = I like it a LOT. This whole mix is fantastic–there’s no one part that’s my favorite. It does get pretty face-melting around 45:00, though.

So the thing about the Chicago-based Wax Trax! bands is that they were industrial rock bands, but because of where they were in Chicago they had a lot of non-straight-white-dude influences: there’s obviously house music (Medusa’s and Berlin…), but also Quincy Jones, Prince and Jam and Lewis out of Minneapolis to some extent, and obviously the fact that the owners of Wax Trax! were gay and the store and many of the venues bands would have played at were quite close to what we now call Boystown…What I’m saying is: this is basically dance music. And it has a great groove.

Runners Up: R Kelly, “Ignition (Remix)” (the urge to dance is stronger than the urge to barf in disgust at R Kelly, so it must be strong); The Rapture, “House of Jealous Lovers” (yeah, still…I loved that dance punk thing of the early 00s); Utah Saints, “Something Good” (this is the only context in which I can tolerate Kate Bush); Hot Since 82 feat. Black Box, “Somebody Everybody“; JD Samson & MEN, “Fucked Up (Wawa Remix).”
