THE NEW PALGRAVE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF RHETORIC

In the 21st century, the field of rhetorical studies has increasingly embraced perspectives,
traditions, people, and subjects that would be both literally and figuratively alien to the ancient
Greek founders of the Western rhetorical tradition. From feminist, queer, disability, postcolonial,
and critical race theories to environmental, scientific, digital, posthuman studies, these once
emerging and marginalized methods are now well-established within rhetoric scholarship.

Palgrave Macmillan’s Media & Communication Editor Robin James is actively soliciting
proposals for an encyclopedia of rhetoric that centers these perspectives and points toward the
field’s future, which will include more scholars and students from groups traditionally
underrepresented in the Western rhetorical canon.

An encyclopedia is a comprehensive collection of tertiary research on the key terms, topics,
debates, traditions, and figures in the field. It is a reference work oriented toward both
researchers and students. Examples include The Palgrave Encyclopedia of Victorian Women’s
Writing
and The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy.

Initial expressions of interest should include a brief description of the editorial team’s approach
and a sample table of contents including section headings, chapter titles/topics, and potential
contributors for each chapter

Questions and expressions of interest should be submitted to robin.james@palgrave-usa.com.
They should be sent in time for desk review and a potential meeting at either the Rhetoric
Society of America at the end of May 2024 or a virtual meeting right before or after the
conference.
